Opening Prayer Samples for Your Christmas Party

Christmas is one of the most blessed times of the year. The world slows its pace, family comes together in a warm embrace and the spirit of giving is in the crisp, cool air. Itā€™s so different from the hectic pace the world usually gallops at throughout the rest of the year. We know Jesus is the reason, not only for the season, but for all of the blessings weā€™ve experienced.

A Christmas party is the perfect time to celebrate the year’s blessings and accomplishments with friends and family, but let us not forget why your house will be filled with the warmth and laughter of so many people that you love and care for. That is why Iā€™m writing this. Below are some sample opening prayers for your Christmas party.

These example prayers suit a variety of styles because the world is filled with different types of people and each one has a unique relationship with God. So while some people might have a much more formal approach to prayer, other people may have a much more informal approach. Regardless of your style, God knows your heart.

Formal Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before you today humbly to thank you, thank you for your blessings and keeping your promises. I thank you not only for the wonderful times, but also for helping us through the hard times. I thank you for your grace, your mercy and the undeserved favor you have shown me throughout this last year.

Lord, I pray for continued blessings in the year to come. I pray for healing where healing is needed, comfort where comfort is needed and provision where provision is needed. I ask that this Christmas party honor you and celebrate Your birth more than it celebrates our own accomplishments, because we know that no accomplishments are possible without your blessing.

It is not by my own power, but by your mercy and grace that I stand here today praying before the family that I love so much. It is with a grateful heart that I pray these words. May your kingdom reign forever.Ā  In your name we pray, Amen.

Informal Prayer

Dear Lord,

Iā€™m not a perfect person and forgive me if I canā€™t get the words exactly the way I want them to sound. Thanks for my family and the food on our table. Thanks for laughter and friendship and the opportunities youā€™ve given me.

Iā€™m sure there are about a million other things that Iā€™m forgetting to thank you for, but just know that Iā€™m thankful. I pray we have a great day today, I pray that I didnā€™t burn the food and I pray the neighbors forgive me for using their lawn like a parking lot. Thank you, Lord. Amen!

Short Prayer

Thank you, Jesus! Iā€™m not a person of many words, but you know my heart Lord. Thank you for my family, my friends, and your blessings. I pray for each and every person here Lord. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.

Prayer for a Great Year

Lord, your blessings have been abundant and apparent. Youā€™ve made our cups runneth over. There is no prayer I could pray that would be eloquent enough to repay you for the blessings you have showered upon us.

I thank you for each and every person here, and for the blessing of their presence. I pray thanks over the blessings in their lives, and fruits weā€™ve reaped as a result of Your undeserved grace, mercy and goodness.

Lord, it is by Your hands that we are saved, and it is by Your hands that goodness happens in our lives. We know that we could never do anything that warrants the kind of abundance and grace you have afforded us, so all I can do is humbly thank you.

I pray that no credit is given to me for any blessings you have channeled through me. I pray that all who have benefited at my hands, realize that it is all from God. Without God, my hands would be empty vessels begging to be filled.

It is only by the grace of God that we stand here today in abundance, in joy and in a warm dwelling. May God continue to light up our lives and hearts in such a way that it is irrefutably Godā€™s generosity. Let us never confuse coincidence and Godā€™s favor.

Lord, I thank you once again and pray that everything we do, be to the glory of Your Kingdom. Amen.

Prayer After a Difficult Year

Dear Jesus,

I think everyone here can agree that we need you more now than we ever have. This year has been- stunning to say the least. You know, Lord. Our family has faced some of the toughest times we have ever faced, but I know that youā€™ve been there with us. I know you have carried us through the hardest parts, Lord.

I donā€™t know what your plan is, but I do know that youā€™re faithful Lord. You said in Your Word that you would ā€œgive unto them beauty for ashes.ā€ Today, in this prayer, I lay before you all of our grief, our heartbreak and our ashes, Lord. I ask that you take them all away and bestow upon us the most beautiful and blessed year ahead.

In Your Word, you said you heal the brokenhearted and bind up our wounds. Here, before you Lord, stands a brokenhearted person, but I stand strong in the shadow of your wings. ā€œEven though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.ā€

Lord, this year has been difficult. To that, I think we can all agree. But this Christmas party is a celebration of the blessings to come. This Christmas party is a celebration of the comfort you afford us. This gathering is a demonstration that no matter what the enemy throws at this family, we will gather together, support each other and praise Your name! We praise the name Jesus! Amen.

Conclusion

Every year is different. Some years are better than others, but there are always blessings to be found. Whether it be in the comfort of God during hard times, or unending blessings and good news. Most years fall somewhere in the middle, but God is in control of it all.

This year, consider giving an opening Christmas prayer. If youā€™ve never done it before, it might be a bit uncomfortable. I know many people who are new to public prayer might feel a bit uncomfortable about it. Just remember this, if there are any unsaved people hearing it, itā€™s an opportunity to show them what a relationship with God truly looks like.

You can show them that it is about being humble about your accomplishments (because theyā€™re not really our accomplishments), and it is about being thankful for what you have. I know many people get concerned about an unsaved person being offended, and that can happen, but if youā€™re only speaking goodness about them and over their lives, what do you have to be ashamed of?

I hope these opening prayer samples for your Christmas party have helped inspire you to not only say a prayer, but perhaps even a starting point to speak Godā€™s love over your event, family and friends. Merry Christmas!
